Playing Area and Equipment

Here is some of the key elements to a Indoor Playing Area and equipment

Dimensions:

59' x 29'6" (18x9m)

This rectangle is surrounded by a "free zone" area which should be 9'10" wide on all sides. This is not always the case when you attend small tournaments. All qualifers and national events should meet the free zone requirements.

The height that is free from obstructions should be a minimum of 23' (7m)

USAV allows the free zone to be 6'6 3/4"

FIVB requires a free zone area of 5m on the side lines and 8m on the endlines,

with 12.5m in height from the playing surface.

Playing Surface:

Flat, horizonal and uniformed

Lines are 2" wide, light color that is different from the floor andother lines marked on the floor.

Center line:

is the 2" line that divides the playing court into two equal courts measuring 29' 6" (9x9m). The line extends beneath the net from sideline to sideline.

Boundary lines:

are the two end lines and side lines that mark the playing court. They are drawn inside the dementions of the playing court.

Attack line:

Also known as the 10’ line. This is a line 9'10" (3m) from the net that separates the back row players from the front row.

Attack line Extentions:

There are 5, 6" short lines 2" wide that extend from the sidelines, for a total length of 70". These extended lines are usually only seen in nationally sanctioned competitions.

Zones and Areas

Substitution Zone: The attack line up to the scorer's table. A player substituting into a game must be in the substitution zone after the down ball whistle has blown and get approval from the down referee before entering the court. Subs must not interfer with play or the officaials' duties.

Net:

39" wide, 31' 6" to 33" in length with a minimum 2" band on the side that is 39" long. The top band should be 2 3/4" wide. The bottom band is usually 2" wide. The bands are considered part of the net.

Height of the net of the net varies with age group and gender:

Age Group Female/Reverse Co-Ed Male/Co-Ed
70 years and above 7' (2.3m) 7' 6" (2.29m)
60 years and above 7' (2.3m) 7' 9 5/8" (2.38m)
55 years and above 7' 21/8" (2.19m) 7' 9 5/8" (2.38m)
45 years and above 7' 21/8" (2.19m) 7' 11 5/8" (2.43m)
15/16/17/18 years and under 7' 4 1/8" (2.24m) 7' 11 5/8" (2.43m)
13/14 years and under 7' 4 1/8" (2.24m) 7' 4 1/8" (2.24m)
11/12 years and under 7' (2.13m) 7' (2.13m)
10 years and under 6' 6" (1.98m) 7' (2.13m)

Antennae:

The antenna is a flex rod that extends 32" above the net and is marked with 4" stripes of contrasting color. the antennae are part of the net and laterally delimit the crossing space.

Ball:

There are many balls to chose from: Molten, Wilson, Spalding,Tachikara,Baden,Ichiban,Mikasa and others.

The key is that all balls must have the same standards regarding circumference, weight, pressure, type, color, etc.. for a tournament. All sanctioned events require the balls to be approved by the governing body.

Standard volleyballs circumference is 65-67 " and weight is 9-10 oz. The pressure should be 4.26-4.61 psi. For players 12 and under their is a volley-lite ball that weight is 7-8 oz.
